What "free download" really means here
The phrase covers two different situations. The first is downloading the desktop editor at no cost under Adobe's trial, which is legitimate and straightforward. The second is downloading a repackaged copy from a file-sharing site, which is neither — those files are the single most common way people end up with unwanted software on a new machine.
We only point at the first. If you need something permanently free rather than time-limited, a free alternative editor is the honest answer, and several of them open layered PSD documents.
Choosing a source you can trust
- Adobe's own site is the default. The trial and paid downloads both come through the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- A source the software owner has authorized in writing — for example a campus software portal or an employer's software centre.

How to verify a download
If the distributor publishes a checksum, comparing it takes about thirty seconds and tells you whether the file arrived intact and unmodified.
Windows
In Command Prompt, run:
certutil -hashfile installer.exe SHA256

shasum -a 256 installer.dmg

If the two strings differ in any character, delete the file and download again from the source. A mismatch means the file is not the one that was published.
After downloading
Installation in seven steps

Choose an authorized source
Start from Adobe's own site or another source the software owner has authorized. Check the address bar before you download anything.
Download the installer
Save the installer to a folder you can find again, such as Downloads.
Open the installer
Run the downloaded file and allow it to make changes when your operating system asks.
Sign in when asked
Desktop installation normally requires signing in with an Adobe account so the licence can be applied.
Complete the installation
Keep the installer open until it reports success. Installation time depends on your disk and connection speed.
Launch the application
Open the editor and create a test document to confirm everything works.
Check for updates
Install available updates so you have the latest fixes and security patches.
