Does Generative Fill work in cracked Photoshop?
Why the AI panel greys out, errors, or silently does nothing in unlicensed installs — and what to do instead.
Short answer
No. Generative Fill does not run on your computer. Photoshop uploads the selection to Adobe's servers, which require a signed-in account with an active entitlement, and returns the generated pixels. A cracked copy exists precisely to remove that account check, so the request has nothing to authenticate with and fails. The seven-day trial includes the AI features in full.
Where the work actually happens
Generative Fill, Generative Expand and the related tools are not local filters. Photoshop sends your selection and prompt to Adobe's Firefly service, the model generates the result remotely, and the layer comes back into your document. Three things must be true for that round trip to complete: you are signed in, the account has a valid entitlement, and the machine can reach Adobe's endpoints.
A patched install breaks the first two by design. Many also block Adobe's domains at the host or firewall level to stop the licence check, which breaks the third as well.
The symptoms people report
- The Contextual Task Bar never appears, or the Generative Fill button stays greyed out.
- A generic network or sign-in error after the prompt is submitted.
- The progress indicator runs and then returns the original selection unchanged.
- Features present in one version disappear after a forced version change.
These are not fixable from the client side. No configuration file, plugin or offline mode can produce a result that only exists on a server you cannot authenticate to.
What else stops working in the same install
Anything account-bound shares the same failure: Neural Filters that download models, cloud documents, Adobe Fonts activation, Share for Review, and library sync. Practically speaking, a patched Photoshop is an older offline editor with the modern half removed — while still carrying the risks described on the crack risks page.
Legitimate ways to use Generative Fill without paying first
- Seven-day trial. The full desktop app with AI features included. Generative credits apply as they do on paid plans. See the trial page for what happens on day eight.
- Photoshop on the web. Generative Fill is available in the browser version for accounts that have access, with nothing to install.
- Adobe Express and the Firefly site. Free tiers with a monthly credit allowance for generative edits, outside Photoshop itself.
- Free editors. GIMP, Krita and Photopea have no equivalent server-side generative tool, but content-aware style fills and manual cloning cover much of the same work. Compared on the alternatives page.
Planning the trial around AI work
Since the trial is short, install it when the project is ready rather than out of curiosity: confirm your machine meets the system requirements, collect your source files, then start the trial and do the generative passes first. The installation guide covers the download and sign-in steps.
